Hey There!

I’m Dr. Jerren Weekes-Kanu, affectionately called “J” or “Dr. J” by my clients. It is my duty as a Christian and psychologist to care about your wellness in a genuine way. Therapy doesn’t make sense if it doesn’t help you THRIVE. No more treading water in the difficult situations you find yourself in. Give me a call.

About ME

I am a fully licensed clinical psychologist and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist certified through IIATP. I specialize in health, quality of life, and well-being and I apply my expertise to help clients move beyond their stressors to thrive. Some clients need help with personal wellness or coping with emotional distress, while others need help improving broken marriages or navigating through life transitions. I enjoy working with women struggling with their sexual health, partner betrayal, or love addiction. I also work with couples in recovery from sex addiction/infidelity to help them redefine their relationship and find health, during and post-discovery. I strive to be ever transparent, genuine, and compassionate to address the needs of my clients and I request that same attitude and demeanor from my clients.

I received my Masters and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. I then completed an APA accredited internship through the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center AND an accredited fellowship through the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor VA Medical Center Consortium with an emphasis on Health/Women’s Health. I started my private practice years ago to have better work-life balance and more time at home with my four kids. Trained as a scientist-practitioner, I place great importance on staying informed of relevant empirical evidence, literature, and up-to-date practices in my field. I continue to complete continuing education workshops in the areas of, for example, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Gottman Method Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

My Take

People often have a unique, yet untapped, ability to rally their personal strengths and live a life of quality despite significant obstacles.  I help my clients understand and strengthen that ability every time we meet. I believe it is important to live our best lives now and I utilize evidence-based strategies to help my clients do just that. My services often have Bio-psychosocial, spiritual, Cognitive-Behavioral, and Mindfulness underpinnings, which I believe are important for achieving meaningful and lasting change.

I invite you to call me. Consultations are free and I'd love to work with you!

I work with clients regardless of their religious affiliation, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, immigration status, nationality, etc. I have no tolerance for the perpetuation of racism or discrimination. While we must unfortunately deal with these issues in our society, my practice rejects those and espouses unity and commonality through universal human experiences and shared values.

Couples Therapy

I primarily utilize The Gottman Method for marital therapy due to the decades of research showing their method to be effective in improving even the worst relationships. Their method is practical, skills based, and easy to use for those who may struggle with knowing how to change. I also integrate mindfulness-based, emotion focused, and cognitive-behavioral approaches to couples therapy as needed.

Please note: I am a level 3 trained Gottman provider and I am in the process of seeking full certification, the final step in my Gottman training. I am only accepting couples who are willing to let me record our therapy sessions. A requirement of the certification process is the submission of therapy videos showing my therapeutic skill. We can discuss this more during a free consultation if you have any questions or concerns.

Treatment Options:

1) Weekly or Bi-weekly, 75-minute, session. Cost: $180 per session

2) Two Day Therapy Intensive or “Marathon Therapy:” Cost: $2000

Reserved for couples with acute, or time sensitive, issues that need to be resolved through dedicated time set aside. Also for couples with chronic and unresolved issues who are highly motivated to make quick but enduring change.

Intensives are offered in a Friday/Sunday arrangement, 6 hours each day, with “homework” assigned to the couple to be completed on Saturday.

COST includes mandatory online assessment, printed handbook with materials/skills, and the individual and joint assessment sessions that must take place prior to the actual intensive.

Note: Intensives are not for couples where one or both partners are…

-engaged in abusive behaviors towards their partner (this will be screened for)

-engaged in compulsive or poorly controlled drug/substance use

- not committed to the relationship or invested in making real change

-cognitively impaired

Talk with your partner about your ability to invest in these services. While it is an investment, couples often feel it was one worth making.

Know that I do not bill insurance. Call your insurance company to determine if you can use your HSA funds or if there are options for gaining reimbursement for the couples therapy services you pay for out-of-pocket.
